Watercolours are both simple and tricky. Simple because they are so easy to use, and are often the first paints children become acquainted with. Tricky because both a steady hand and degree of patience are required to deal with moody paint which seems to run off in unexpected directions – and can’t easily be rubbed out!
Kids, in my experience, can be natural perfectionists, but watercolour can be perfect only occasionally. I give watercolour paints to children only when I know them well enough to be sure they understand that some messy puddle in their painting once in a while is all part of the fun!
What I love about watercolours is the spontaneity and tension they have. Painting with watercolours means relinquishing full control of the process. I never know what the final picture will look like. I am not its creator, but rather the conduit between the idea and the resulting artwork, where water, colour, paper, fluid dynamics and some unknown magic interact.
